Targeted Humor
I had to stop myself in conversation with someone today. I wanted to come up with a snappy comeback, but I knew better. I ceased attempting those long ago. The main reason being that the result is usually less a comeback than widespread air strike. The only things I can think of are so cruel and cutting that any intended humor is lost. Wars are started. Bridges are burned and then the water underneath boiled and the air above gassed. That is probably more than enough combat imagery.
I often take funny things I’ve said or experienced, modify them to fit the comic form, and archive for future use. In this case I lock it up in my head, morph it beyond recognition, and wait so long before creating it that the person couldn’t possibly realize that they are the subject of the joke. Great. Now everyone I know is going to comb through the archives looking for anything that might refer to them.
